What You Should Own After an AI-Built WordPress Site Is Delivered

A useful AI-built WordPress delivery should leave the customer with an editable site, a clear license map, control of the domain and chosen hosting, and enough material to reconstruct or migrate the agreed result.

“You own the website” is too vague to be a delivery contract. A WordPress site combines open-source software, original project work, customer content, third-party themes and plugins, fonts, stock assets, domains, hosting accounts, external services, and sometimes premium licenses with separate terms.

The minimum ownership checklist

For a customer-hosted C-stage handoff, confirm:

• the WordPress theme, child theme, custom plugin, block patterns, or other source created for the project;
• a content/database export appropriate to the delivery route;
• uploaded media that the customer is entitled to use;
• dependency, version, and environment notes;
• the source version that matches the verified preview;
• rebuild, import, or restore instructions;
• an inventory of premium plugins, themes, fonts, images, and external accounts;
• which licenses transfer, which remain customer-owned, and which must be purchased separately;
• known issues, untested areas, and the remaining production step.

The customer should control the domain registration and DNS, or have an explicit written arrangement stating otherwise. The same principle applies to the production hosting account, analytics, search properties, transactional email, payment, and other business-critical services.

Source ownership is not third-party ownership

Receiving project source does not grant ownership of WordPress, an upstream plugin, a premium theme, a commercial font, stock photography, or a model provider. WordPress is distributed under the GPL; individual third-party components may have compatible open-source terms or separate commercial terms. Verify each component rather than applying one label to the whole site.

What happens if a subscription ends?

This question should be answered before purchase:

• Can the WordPress site continue running?
• Can the customer export source and data?
• Which hosted AI editing, preview, backup, or maintenance services stop?
• Do premium plugin updates or support stop while the installed version remains?
• Is there a migration path and an expiration date for temporary previews?
